Today was a good day, for after work, Alison, Yanda, and I walked the High Line.

the high line

Thanks have to go out to Rosecrans Baldwin; his photo essay a few months ago reinvigorated my interest in the abandoned freight line, and Alison’s trip to New York turned out to be the perfect time to finally climb up and explore a bit. (Update: the photo collection from our trip is now available.)

Very Cool. How do you get on the High Line?

That has linear urban park written all over it, similar to the promenade plantée in Paris (which runs on top of the Viaduc des Arts).

Richard, that’s a plan that’s been proposed repeatedly for the tracks. Whether it will actually happen, despite celebrity endorsements from Martha Stewart and our current mayor, remains to be seen.

John:

We went up through a trucking parking lot at 33rd and 11th; the rails come down to grade there. We came down via a staircase at 17th and 10th, but you’d best be careful — three of the stairs are totally disconnected from the staircase frame on one side, and the bottom of the staircase is in a police impound lot.

Sooon! I had to get the new slide show code up and running… and now it seems to be running well, so I’ll probably get the images up tomorrow.

I’ve lived downtown for the last few years, and I always wanted to walk the High Line. Your pictures inspired us, so we decided to do it this weekend. You can see our pictures at Bluejake:
