Finally, an online image gallery that has a good reproduction of Milton Glaser’s redone “I Heart NY” graphic (with the smudged heart and “MORE THAN EVER” underneath). Now, if I could only get over the wracking guilt that I’d have submitting the image to CafePress and having them make me a shirt with it on the front. Does anyone know if Glaser has licensed the image to anyone who’s legitimately printing shirts?
In an column in the New York Times, I read that Glaser doesn’t own the rights to the I “heart” NY image; it’s actually owned by some sort of non-profit or government agency. According to the column, Glaser didn’t actually have the rights to create the new logo. I think the column was Joyce Purnick’s Metro Matters on October 15. However, I’m not positive that is the column since I don’t want to pay for the article on nytimes.com and am too lazy to do a Lexis search in our library. I don’t think you will find anyone “legitimately” printing shirts because the image itself is not “legitimate.”
