It’s inappropriate to tell someone they’re not being patriotic because they’re not reacting to the crisis in the same way you are. It’s inappropriate to tell someone they’re “un-American” or “unpatriotic” because their house or car happens not to be festooned with flags. It’s inappropriate to say awful things to somebody because you disagree with their peaceful yet honest reactions.

In the wake of the terrorist attacks, Chuck Taggart has something to say about people who proclaim to know the right way to demonstrate patriotism. (That link now reflects Chuck’s permanent URL for the entry.)

Um… Jason… correct me if I’m wrong… but it doesn’t look like you have permanent links either. Unless, of course, you consider this comments page to be the permanent post…

I’ve got two types of permanent links.

This comment page does serve as a permanent link for an individual posting.

And each day has a permanent link; in the date bar is a circled P, and that’s the link.

Thanks for the clarification.

My bad.

Jason,

You can change that link to a permanent link at
http://www.gumbopages.com/looka/archive/2001-09.html#17.2

I’ve gotta figure something out one of these days. I code my
entire site by hand, and as good as Blogger and Greymatter can be,
I just still like the idea of doing it by hand better. Maybe I can start hard-coding a link to at least one particular day’s entries, if not individual entries. (Hmm, there’s an idea … wouldn’t be too hard …)

Chuck, the link’s changed, and I appreciate the addition of the permanent URL for me! I had no idea that you hand-code your site, though; I hope that my original statement didn’t sound pejorative or anything.

Thanks for updating, Jason. :)

No, what you said didn’t sound pejorative, but you’re absolutely right. The way I do it does make it difficult for people to link to me, and this has come up many times before. If people are going to be nice enough to do that, I should at least try to make it easier for them.

My reason for stubbornly adhering to the hand-coding is probably the worst one: “‘Cause I’ve always done it that way.” I’ve actually been playing with Greymatter, so I might be able to implement that one of these days. Then again, I still haven’t implemented CSS on my site, so I’m still a bit of a dinosaur.
