To finish off the day, I’ve got one more teaser picture from my Italy trip. (I plan to clean up and post all of my pictures sometime in the next few weeks; tidying over 200 pictures is time-consuming!)

Do you know where in the world the only other full size replica of David is located?
I do, I do! At the The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, FL! My grandmother lives near there, and I visited the musem when I was really little. The only think that I remember is David.
If there is a full-size replica in Sarasota, then there are more than there used to be. Sioux Falls, South Dakota — that big art metropolis — has (what used to be one of only two) a David replica. We used to diaper him in high school…
There appear to be a lot more than just one other, Kathy. There’s one that’s probably a lot older than the one in SD that’s also in Florence, in the Piazalle Michelangelo (it’s bronze); there’s also one in Caesar’s Palace (in Vegas) that’s sculpted out of marble from the same quarry as the original. There’s another full-size marble one on one of Carnival’s cruise liners, the Carnival Pride, that is heavy enough to have required being built into the boat during construction (since the crane that lifted it into place wouldn’t have been able to deal with it any other way), and lastly, there’s one on the Gold Coast in Australia (in a place called Raptis Plaza).
OK, mister researcher. I shall correct myself: In downtown Sioux Falls you will find the only full-scale BRONZE replica sculpture in the United States of Michelangelo’s David. The only other full-scale bronze replica sculpture of Michelangelo’s Moses is on the campus of Augustana College. Forgot the crucial bronze element…

Who am I?
I'm Jason Levine, and have been keeping this site since the waning days of 1999. I'm a physician, a husband, a father, a scientist, an uncle, a photographer, and an unapologetic geek. I currently live in Washington, DC, and wear the two hats of a bioinformatics researcher and a clinical pediatric hematologist and oncologist.
