From the barrel of great ideas: ZOË, an application that sits between you and your mail, indexing it all and making it searchable (among other things). Once this puppy understands IMAP mail, I’ll have to give it a test ride.

The IMAP protocol can allow a client and server to perform a search on the body of a message. If both the server and client support such searches, all of the searching of the body text is done on the server. In terms of implementation, the server could choose to index the body of the message. If it were to do so, full-text searches of message contents could be fairly fast.

I’m almost positive UW-IMAP does not do full-text indexing of message bodies, and I think that Cyrus does not do full-text indexing of message bodies. On the other hand, I have a feeling that Exchange does do a full-text on message bodies. (Of course, Exchange can be an IMAP server)

It does support IMAP as a client.
